Microsoft has announced the full first wave of titles for Xbox Game Pass in June 2024, and it includes an overlooked survival horror game from 2022. As is always the case, each month sees new titles leave the subscription service as new ones are added, with new day-one releases such as Still Wakes the Deep coming on June 18 or classic RPGs such as Octopath Traveler making a return to the roster alongside its sequel.
As revealed in a post on Xbox Wire, the brutal horror title The Callisto Protocol will be available on Xbox Game Pass on June 13. Striking Distance Studios' first game, The Callisto Protocol, was released in 2022 to Mixed or Average reviews, with a 69 score on Metacritic, and a similar 6.9 from users, as the game experienced a troubled launch with some technical issues, particularly on PC, despite most critics praising its terrifying and violent atmosphere. Fortunately, the game has received some patches since then and is now a solid - if relatively short - horror experience, with more recent reviews reflecting this.
According to How Long To Beat, The Callisto Protocol's base story can be completed in 10 hours, with roughly 15-and-a-half hours for those aiming for 100% completion. Its Final Transmission DLC, which isn't included in Xbox Game Pass, adds approximately 3 further hours of gameplay.

The Callisto Protocol Is Worth Checking Out On Game Pass
Due To Its Brutal Gameplay And Intense Atmosphere
The Callisto Protocol was one of the most anticipated horror games of 2022 in part because it was directed by Dead Space creator Glen Schofield. With a similar claustrophobic brand of gory space horror focusing on an infectious disease that reanimated the dead within an isolated location, many felt like The Callisto Protocol could have been the kind of spiritual successor fans of the Dead Space series had been waiting for - especially as the Dead Space remake from Motive Studio came out sometime after.
While those expecting another Dead Space may be disappointed, The Callisto Protocol should certainly scratch the itch of those looking for a short yet tense horror title, especially once players get hold of some of the game's more ranged weapons and rely less on melee, as the brutal gameplay really comes into its own as players blast their way through the confines of the Black Iron Prison. The game's Gravity Restraint Projector is also great fun to use, as players can manipulate the movement of enemies, pulling them nearer or pushing them away... potentially into a fan or grinders for maximum carnage.
In its current state, The Callisto Protocol is certainly worth checking out. Hopefully, its inclusion on Xbox Game Pass will encourage some players who had perhaps written it off upon its launch to revisit it and see the changes and improvements Striking Distance Studios has made to it over the years
