What happened to Clipper Cruise Lines? ›

Clipper Cruise lines has since sold off its remaining vessels and went out of business. The line operated nine small vessels that range in capacity from 78 to 138 passengers in the Americas, South Pacific and Asia.

Inspired by the famous tall ship the Preussen inaugurated at the beginning of the 19th century, the Royal Clipper is proud to be the largest five-masted square-sail sailboat in existence today since her legendary predecessor. With 134 meters in length and 42 sails, the Royal Clipper is a splendid sight to behold.

Star Clipper and Star Flyer are both 360 feet long and each carries just 170 guests in pampered comfort. Life aboard is blissfully relaxed, much like travelling on a private yacht.

Star Clipper isn't an "all-inclusive" ship, by any means. You even have to buy your own bubbly at the "Champagne Sail Away Party." That said, prices for drinks, shore excursions and other extras are reasonable.

Star Clippers maintains a smart casual dress code: Beach or resort-wear on deck during the day and casual during the evening. Deck shoes are the best footwear for daytime. There is one Captain's dinner on each cruise where people dress up a little more, but there are no black-tie events or formal nights.

The four tiniest (category 6, Deck 1), at 90 square feet have upper and lower berths and lack TVs. The two larger ones (category 5, Deck 2) are similar in size (120 square feet) and configuration to the ocean-view cabins.

The Decline of Clipper Ships

The emergence of steamships and the economic downturn that followed the Panic of 1857 brought about the end of clipper ships. Although much slower than clippers, steamships did not depend on the caprices of the wind and promised a more reliable and predictable journey.

Mikael Krafft, the owner of Star Clippers, was born in Stockholm, Sweden, on January 13, 1946 and grew up in the port of Saltsjöbaden in the archipelago adjacent to Stockholm. His area was home to one of the finest yachtbuilders in the world, the Plyms Shipyard.

Surviving ships
