Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl did not have the best time while it was being developed. With multiple delays, the game has taken ages to develop, and the studio even had to move out of Ukraine and to Prague to finish off development.

The devs even had to deal with Russian hackers leaking insane amounts of content from an alpha build, but amidst all this controversy, the game is finally ready and now Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl is finally ready for release.

Stalker 2 Release Date

Initially the plan was for Stalker 2 to be released back in 2012. That, clearly, didn't happen. Then the release was set for 2022, but with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the release had to be pushed back once. more. Well, at the Xbox Games Showcase 2024, the official release of September 5, 2024 was revealed. So, the wait is finally almost over.

Stalker 2 Platforms

Stalker 2 is confirmed to be shipped for PC and Xbox Series X | S. You will find the game on Steam, GOG, Microsoft Store and Epic Games Store for PC, while it is also implemented in the Xbox Game Pass. Stalker 2, is not planned on being released on PlayStation 5 yet. That could also be correlated to an announcement by Microsoft that Stalker should be for the first three-month only on their platform due to the Court Battle between them, Apple and Epic.

Story & Setting

Since Stalker 2 is a sequel to the Stalker trilogy, there will be familiar Events and Locations to those who played the previous games. However, you can play the game also as a standalone according to GSC Game World. You play as Skif and your actions will affect the outcomes on short-term as well as long-term.

Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl is set in the hazardous area around Chornobyl. The seamless Open World we will experience features old Locations like Pripyat and Cordon that are likely to be seen and new ones like Duga, too. As the developer said, there will be plenty of old and new places to be discovered and many secrets to be found. Nonetheless, it is not said which Cities will return.

Gameplay

As its ancestors, Stalker 2 is a first-person shooter with a focus on survival aspects. Living in the zones shouldn't be easy. The day-night cycle and the dynamic weather are to keep the world in change. You should be weary about that as well as on all the other survival mechanics. Hunger, bleeding, sleeping and radiation effects will make it harder to stay alive as much as the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone'sAnomalies. Paired with a simple User Interface, all of this adds up and builds a breathtaking immersive experience.

New Anomalies And A New Life System

Stalker 2 will feature new life mechanics. These are build and enhanced from their existing A-Life system. The A-Life 2.0 will, unlike most other video games, implement that the life is tracked and can evolve also outside the player's range. Factions and Mutants will fight for "living space, migrating, capturing new places, or retreating to safer areas", to make every Zone unique.

Furthermore, new Anomalies are about to appear. As seen in the trailer, anomalies like "Gravity" and "Carousel" will return, and a new Anomaly Detector is being introduced. As shown in previous games, GSC Game World has lots of anomalies up their sleeve and we can expect some innovative content.

Combat Mechanics

As the AI got stronger and there will be new challenging mutants and factions to be aware, GSC Game World took advantage of their existing well working first-person shooter mechanics from their former games and improved them for the sequel. Stalker 2 includes more than 30 different weapons. Every weapon with its own modifications that partly can be changed in combat or while you are out in the danger zones. But there will also be more complex upgrades and modifications that have to be made by a technician.

Multiplayer

GSC Game World confirmed that there will be a coop-mode or other kind of multiplayer support in the future. Although it isn't clear how exactly it will work, the multiplayer mode will be implemented in the game after release.
